Titanium Nitride (TiN)

The titanium nitride coating is a universal wear protection layer with a layer thickness of approximately 3 µm. It is excellently suited for taps because it reduces the coefficient of friction and the tendency to form friction deposits. The coating allows higher cutting speeds due to its high resistance to wear, and therefore lowers the cost per piece.

Titanium Carbonitride (TiCN)

The TiCN coating is harder than the TiN layer. This results in excellent resistance to wear, but also less resistance to heat than TiN. The TiCN coating is especially suitable for high alloyed steels and cast aluminium alloys with high silicon contents.

Titanium Aluminium Nitride (TiAlN)

The TiAlN coating permits use even at high temperatures on the workpiece due to the inclusion of aluminium and combines this with the high wear resistance of the TiCN coating. It allows high cutting rates and, of all the hard layers, it is the most suitable for dry machining.

Chromium Nitride (CrN)

The CrN coating has excellent chemical resistance. It is especially dense and protects the tool from corrosive agents in particular. Due to the composition of the layer and the good resistance to heat, the coating is especially suitable for cutting copper, brass, and bronze alloys.

Nitridation (NIT)

During nitridation, the surface of the tool is enriched (diffused) with nitrogen. This creates a bonding layer that resists temperatures of up to about 500°, exhibits so-called porous zones on the surface, and has proven useful as a carrier of lubricant. Nitridation provides relatively reasonably priced protection against wear that is especially suitable for machining cast materials.

Vaporization (VAP)

Vaporization is understood to be the enrichment of the barrier layer on the tool with oxygen using a thermochemical process. The iron oxide layer created increases resistance against adhesion and corrosion. This reduces the tendency to form friction deposits when machining steel. It is recommended for machining low alloy structural steels and rustproof materials.
